Graduate programs equip students with fundamental knowledge about insect biology and their interactions with human societies and ecosystems. The diverse impacts of insects, spanning from advantageous to harmful, creates numerous research avenues where insects are central. Potential thesis subjects could focus on insects influencing forests, ornamental trees, and timber products; those impacting human health; species acting as natural enemies of pests; or those serving as vital food sources for birds and other vertebrates. Ongoing research explores forest defoliator population patterns, chemical signaling in beetles and moths, the development of insect communication systems, how forestry affects aquatic insects, biological pest control in woodlands, and the biochemical processes behind insect detoxification.
