The Department of Animal Sciences and Industry is a multifaceted academic unit with around 50 faculty members dedicated to research, education, and extension programs focused on domesticated livestock. The department currently advises nearly 1,000 undergraduate students and supports about 60 graduate candidates working toward M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science.
For advanced studies, the department maintains conveniently located animal research and teaching facilities near the main campus. These include specialized units for beef (both pasture and feedlot systems), dairy, swine, sheep, poultry, and equine studies. Additionally, Call Hall and Weber Hall house modern laboratories capable of performing most analytical procedures needed for scientific investigations.
Graduate education in the department is structured around six specialized discipline areas: animal genetics and breeding, meat science, non-ruminant nutrition, animal physiology, ruminant nutrition, and food science. The food science program, which represents a significant interdisciplinary degree offering, is described in greater detail elsewhere in the catalog.
