Top-tier facilities for lab and field research feature Cornell's exceptional Entomology Library and prestigious insect collection. The Boyce Thompson Institute on campus and the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva provide world-class research environments. Doctoral candidates must complete a mandatory academic review, typically in their first year, with qualifying exams due by the fifth semester. Entomology students should cultivate and exhibit innovative thinking across research, teaching, and extension work. We measure success when students: actively engage intellectually and integrate into the academic community through seminars, journal clubs, conferences, and lab meetings; synthesize diverse information to generate hypotheses while mastering relevant literature and discussing their work with colleagues; hone critical analysis skills to assess arguments, form reasoned perspectives, and contextualize their research; produce scientific writing including proposals, publications, and outreach materials; and execute research by mastering methodologies while analyzing and interpreting their results.
Hold (or expect to hold at the time of matriculation) a baccalaureate degree, or its equivalent, granted by a university of recognized standing.
