The Plant Biology department provides diverse educational and research options in plant and fungal sciences. We dedicate ourselves to delivering exceptional research experiences and fostering our students' professional growth throughout their careers.
UGA's Plant Biology Department features an interdisciplinary approach, with 25 faculty members investigating various plant and fungal research topics. Recognized among the nation's leading plant biology programs, our department maintains a wide-ranging mission that extends beyond its namesake organisms. We excel in integrated fields including molecular genetics, biochemistry, physiology, biology education, cellular and developmental biology, genomics, bioinformatics, systematics, and ecology. To support students in achieving their degree goals and enable faculty to evaluate progress, the Department has implemented general timeline recommendations. Typically, students complete their Ph.D. program within 5 years.
