The Agricultural Plant Biology program concentrates on vegetation utilized for cover crops, sustenance, textiles, energy, and landscaping. This curriculum places significant research focus on how plants react to environmental and biological pressures, reproductive processes from genetic to agricultural scales, and cultivating higher yields under resource constraints. Our diverse team of researchers, extension specialists, and students conducts studies in subtropical horticulture, crop improvement, and plants vital to both California and global farming systems. Key species under investigation encompass citrus fruits, avocados, legumes like cowpea and alfalfa, cereal grains including barley and wheat, staple crops such as rice and corn, vegetables ranging from tomatoes to carrots, orchard crops including olives and pistachios, turf grasses, industrial plants like cotton, and various hybrids. Certain research groups apply findings from model organisms to cultivated plants. Investigations range from field observations to genetic studies, equipping graduate students for professional paths in corporate, academic, and outreach sectors.
