The Department of Mathematics ranks among the top graduate mathematics programs in the southeastern United States and stands as one of the University of Georgia's most substantial academic units. Students can pursue four advanced degrees: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Arts Non-Thesis (MA), Master of Applied Mathematical Science (MAMS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Housed within UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the department operates from the Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center near the Science Library on the university's south campus. The curriculum encompasses diverse mathematical disciplines including algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, various forms of differential equations, multiple geometry branches, mathematical physics, number theory, numerical analysis, probability theory, and topology. Qualified graduate students may receive financial assistance through teaching or research assistantships, renewable for up to five years based on academic performance and progress.
The PhD program represents the pinnacle of mathematical education, equipping students with comprehensive knowledge across classical mathematics while guiding them to cutting-edge research frontiers. This rigorous program prepares graduates for academic positions at universities or comparable research roles in government and corporate settings. Prospective PhD candidates must hold either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mathematics or a closely related field.
