The Mathematics doctoral program at Kansas State University aims to equip students with essential skills for contributing meaningfully to the mathematical community. To achieve this, candidates must satisfy faculty requirements demonstrating both comprehensive knowledge and specialized expertise. Students begin by completing a written Qualifying Examination that tests their grasp of diverse mathematical disciplines, followed by a Specialty Examination showcasing their capacity for independent research in a selected area. These milestones lead to original research culminating in a Ph.D. dissertation. Additionally, mathematics doctoral candidates must prove reading competency in French, German, or Russian. With most non-English mathematical publications appearing in these languages, the graduate faculty considers proficiency in at least one to be a vital research asset.
