Students craft an academic plan focusing on biological, chemical, or physical oceanography. Research specialties often encompass marine biogeochemistry, coastal ecosystems, oceanographic coastal processes, microbial ecology, marine ecosystem simulation, and polar microbial studies. The Ph.D. program mandates at least 30 graduate credit hours, including 9 credits from core classes: Biological Oceanography (MARS 8010), Chemical Oceanography (MARS 8020), and Physical Oceanography (MARS 8030). Supplementary graduate-level courses from Marine Sciences and related departments help tailor each student's curriculum. Fieldwork participation is essential, requiring one significant oceanographic expedition and one prolonged coastal research project. Teaching practicum is another program requirement.
