The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies (MALAS) with a focus on Race, Diaspora, Gender, and Sexuality examines how racial, gender, and sexual identities shape social structures, inequalities, political systems, national identities, emotions, self-perception, and social justice. This specialization explores how these factors influence decolonization, colonial legacies, nation formation, historical knowledge systems, and social awareness. Students can select relevant courses from various departments across the university.
The Center for Latin American Studies provides these graduate options: An interdisciplinary MA in Latin American Studies, A graduate certificate in Latin American studies, and A specialized certificate in Tropical Conservation and Development. The program draws from over 250 Latin America-focused courses offered by more than 35 academic departments.
MALAS thrives through vibrant exchanges among faculty and students from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. Working with 180 affiliated faculty across humanities, sciences, and professional schools, students craft personalized study plans combining interdisciplinary coursework. Graduates pursue careers in education, research, international organizations, government, and private sector throughout the Americas, with many advancing to doctoral programs.
