UCLA's Department of African American Studies provides essential interdisciplinary education for undergraduate and graduate students. Our academic work, courses, and initiatives concentrate on the historical narratives, cultural expressions, political movements, and intellectual heritage of the African Diaspora, with particular emphasis on ongoing social justice issues. Faculty members in African American Studies contribute substantially to creating groundbreaking frameworks within social sciences and humanities. By offering comprehensive training in diverse cross-disciplinary methodologies, we equip students with a worldwide understanding of Black identity and communities. The department upholds its tradition of cultivating internationally-minded scholars dedicated to examining and documenting the real-life experiences and liberation aspirations of African and African Diasporic populations.
