This graduate program allows students to tailor their coursework toward sustainable cultivation of agronomic, turf, forestry, and ornamental plants while gaining comprehensive training in conventional soil science. Ideal candidates will demonstrate keen interest in agricultural sciences and natural resource conservation, particularly regarding sustainable yields and water preservation.
The Soil and Water Sciences Department provides Master of Science programs (with thesis or professional non-thesis pathways) and Ph.D. degrees, featuring concentrations in ecology, environmental science, hydrology, and soil science. Interdisciplinary options include biogeochemistry, GIS applications, tropical agriculture, turfgrass science, and wetland ecology. Departmental research focuses on (but isn't restricted to): Nutrient and Waste Control Strategies, Ecosystem Restoration, Carbon Cycle Studies, Landscape Evaluation Techniques, and Aquatic Environment Conservation.

Students currently holding an undergraduate degree (MS applicants) or a graduate degree (PhD applicants) are welcome to apply to our diverse range of available graduate programs. In addition to our traditional research-based MS-thesis and PhD degrees, we also offer a distance education-based MS-non-thesis degree. This degree option focuses on coursework and synthesis of existing research. Students may also select graduate concentrations in Agroecology, climate science, geographical information systems, global systems agroecology (PhD only), hydrologic sciences, research methods, tropical conservation and development, and wetland sciences. Note that all coursework required for some of these concentrations may not be available to DE students. Applicants with a bachelor's degree only, a minimum grade point average of B (3.0), calculated from all grades and credits after the semester where the applicant reached 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours is required.
