This program is designed for students seeking firsthand engagement with modern Greek language, literature, and culture, while also exploring ancient and medieval Greek heritage. Participants examine diaspora communities in depth, including Florida's vibrant Greek-American populations, studying their historical roots and present-day cultural expressions. Mastering a contemporary European language opens career opportunities in translation, education, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, and organizations connected to Greece or Cyprus.
The classical studies major offers interdisciplinary pathways with concentrations in ancient languages, classical civilization, and teaching certification, providing comprehensive education about Greek and Roman history, literature, and culture. These three tracks require Latin or ancient Greek proficiency. A fourth modern Greek concentration focuses on contemporary Greek language and cultural studies, requiring modern Greek fluency. This modern Greek track suits students pursuing immersive experiences with Greece's living culture while gaining insights into its ancient and medieval past. The curriculum includes detailed examination of diaspora communities, particularly Florida's thriving Greek-American population, their historical development and current cultural practices. Acquiring a modern European language enables graduates to pursue careers in translation, academia, service industries, tourism, media, and institutions with Greek or Cypriot connections.
