Classics appeal to all, and students pursuing this major join a welcoming Department that combines the advantages of a small liberal arts college within a major state university. Faculty members know their majors personally, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies collaborates with each student to identify courses aligned with their passions and professional aspirations.
While some Classics graduates become educators or researchers, this field is not solely career-focused. The Department provides a well-rounded liberal arts education, cultivating an environment that honors traditional academic approaches while embracing fresh perspectives. Classics inherently bridges disciplines, and the Department promotes a holistic understanding of antiquity through history, literature, and material culture. Students explore classical works both within traditional humanities frameworks and through modern critiques of cultural legacies. Every Classics course prioritizes analytical reasoning, close examination, and strong communication skills.
Some Classics majors pursue academia as philologists or archaeologists, with the Department boasting strong placement in top graduate programs. Others enter teaching or museum careers—FSU takes pride in educating most of Florida's Latin instructors (with national demand for Latin teachers currently exceeding supply). Importantly, most Classics graduates discover their broad liberal arts foundation serves them well in professional fields. Our alumni excel in law, business, and medical school admissions, with successful careers in journalism, advertising, publishing, theater, law, and judiciary roles. One distinguished graduate earned FSU's sole Rhodes Scholarship.
