Exceptional Civil and Environmental Engineering students can enroll in the 4plus1 program, leading to both a Bachelor's in Environmental Engineering (BENE) and a Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) with various specializations, completed in five years. This opportunity is exclusively for University of Delaware undergraduates in the BENE program.
Environmental engineering utilizes scientific principles and engineering methods to enhance the natural world, tackle pollution issues, and promote environmental sustainability.
Environmental engineers work to safeguard and revitalize our land, water, and air quality. The comprehensive core curriculum equips students with the essential skills to apply scientific knowledge in natural and engineered settings, ensuring access to clean drinking water, managing waste materials, remediating polluted soil and groundwater, and preventing environmental degradation. Students explore the origins and behavior of pollutants and develop practical solutions to environmental issues. The program's flexibility allows students to tailor their education with technical electives aligned with career aspirations, graduate studies, or minors in sustainability, energy, policy, or related disciplines.
Our faculty, engaged in research and professional organizations, keep the curriculum up-to-date and academically rigorous. The program incorporates hands-on learning through discussions of contemporary topics, projects focused on current environmental concerns, and involvement in undergraduate research. Approximately 30% of environmental engineering undergraduates serve as paid research assistants, with juniors and seniors commonly participating, though students may start research earlier in their studies.
