Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary program rooted in social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Arts degree equips students to critically examine the social, political, intellectual, and artistic aspects of African American and African Diasporic experiences by comparing various sources including articles, books, films, artworks, and archival documents. Students learn to articulate this knowledge through oral and written communication while applying their skills to community service initiatives benefiting Black populations locally. These competencies can enhance any professional path students pursue. The Africana Gender Studies Concentration (BA) offers comprehensive insights into gender dynamics among people of African descent, considering diverse intersecting identities.
Graduates will achieve these learning outcomes: 1. Explain and assess intersecting concepts of gender and race. 2. Examine how gender intersects with personal identities and societal structures. 3. Apply an intersectional Africana gender perspective encompassing sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, and class. 4. Utilize Africana Studies methodologies focusing on gender issues affecting African-descended populations. 5. Develop critical analyses addressing gender norms, power structures, and patriarchal systems impacting Black communities. 6. Apply Africana gender frameworks to interpret systemic social and political dynamics. 7. Produce academic research on significant gender topics affecting Black communities worldwide.
