The Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures (LAIC) at Columbia University, housed in the Casa Hispánica, has built a globally recognized reputation as a hub for Hispanic and Lusophone scholarship. The department delivers language training in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan while presenting an adaptable curriculum to explore the diverse expressions of Hispanic and Lusophone cultures across all eras—from medieval times to today's interconnected world—and within multiple cultural settings: the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Portugal's former colonies, and the U.S.
Learners may join the program regardless of their current language proficiency or cultural knowledge. A placement test helps assess the appropriate starting level for new or continuing students. Most majors and concentrators in Hispanic or Portuguese studies pursue dual degrees, integrating perspectives and approaches from disciplines like history, political science, gender studies, anthropology, economics, Latino studies, and Latin American studies, enriching classroom dialogues.
