Master of Arts programs generally span two years of full-time enrollment and are available in various disciplines including French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Spanish Studies, Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies, and Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies. These M.A. programs can function either as the foundational two-year phase for subsequent Ph.D. studies within the department or as standalone degrees. Additionally, the M.A. qualification prepares graduates for teaching positions at elementary or secondary educational levels.
Candidates may pursue their Master's degree through one of two approved pathways, as designated by their advisory committee. Both Plan A and Plan B can serve as pathways to Ph.D. admission. Plan A mandates completion of at least twenty-one credits in advanced coursework, plus nine additional credits in Master's Thesis Research (GRAD 5950 or GRAD 5960) for students enrolled from Fall 1998 onward, culminating in a thesis. Plan B necessitates a minimum of thirty credits in advanced coursework and a comprehensive examination, without requiring a thesis. Advisory committees retain the authority to exceed these minimum credit requirements for either plan.
Regardless of the chosen plan, all M.A. candidates must fulfill the specified credit requirements, which include coursework in Literary Theory and Foreign Language Teaching Methodology as approved by their committee. Those pursuing state teaching certification should select the Teaching Methodology course and coordinate with the NEAG School of Education regarding additional requirements, as further education courses are typically necessary for certification.
