The Emergent Technologies and Media Arts Practices (ETMAP) PhD is a hands-on research program focused on investigating media innovations, artistic methodologies, and theoretical frameworks in technology and art. Participants actively engage with and analyze the media practices they examine, aiming to produce both an academic dissertation and a creative media project that contextualizes digital art within wider cultural and historical contexts.

Structured as a four-year program, it involves 72 credit hours of study, along with key milestones including a First Year Review, Comprehensive Exam, Prospectus Defense, and Dissertation Defense. The curriculum offers significant flexibility, allowing students to select up to 15 credit hours of guided electives and independent study, including cross-departmental collaborations. Following candidacy approval, scholars dedicate three semesters (30 credit hours) to in-depth research, resulting in an original dissertation that advances media arts and technology.

The program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice. The final dissertation comprises two equally weighted elements: a scholarly written component and a creative media project, requiring students to excel as both researchers and practicing artists.
