Rooted in cross-disciplinary media and cultural studies, our doctoral program integrates diverse academic fields and theoretical perspectives. Faculty expertise covers regions worldwide: the Middle East, East Asia, the Global South, Africa, and Europe. Our scholars produce groundbreaking research in their specialties, fostering an intellectually vibrant space for advanced study. The program explores theoretical frameworks across multiple domains - media studies, visual culture, history, science and technology research, anthropology, sociology, disability studies, sound research, and political science. Research methodologies are equally varied, incorporating semiotics, worldwide ethnographic studies, gender and queer theories, critical race analysis, qualitative/quantitative discourse examination, political/cultural economics, and other analytical approaches. We adopt an international viewpoint, understanding media landscapes as transcending national and cultural boundaries, while acknowledging media technologies' deep historical roots and precursors.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to the PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication is very competitive. By mid-February, the top candidates will be contacted for a video interview. Following the interviews, five applicants are admitted and begin the program the following September. Doctoral students in Media, Culture, and Communication typically receive full fellowship funding for five years.

Success in a theory and research-driven doctorate such as Media, Culture, and Communication depends heavily on a candidate's ability to read and think critically, to reason with acuity, and to write with clarity, precision, and fluency. We devote particular attention in selecting candidates for admission to evidence of an applicant's abilities in these areas, and to the background work of an applicant in the area/topic they intend to pursue.

You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
