The PhD in Emerging Media Studies (EMS) prepares future academic and professional leaders by requiring doctoral candidates to make original scholarly contributions through their thesis work. This program equips students with a thorough grasp of emerging media's societal and organizational impacts while refining their research capabilities for conducting independent, innovative studies. Participants explore both the theoretical foundations and real-world applications of emerging media, developing the ability to critically assess its societal implications.
To advance to PhD candidacy, students must successfully complete at least 60 graduate-level course units, maintaining a B grade or better in each. These units must include both mandatory courses and approved electives as specified in the program requirements.
Following coursework completion, students proceed to COM EM 902 to prepare for their qualifying exam. After passing this assessment, candidates register for COM EM 993 to develop their doctoral thesis, which must offer novel insights to the field.
The program requires a minimum of 68 units for graduation.
