The Media Arts and Sciences (MAS) program provides graduate studies culminating in a Master of Science, Master of Science in Media Technology, Master of Science in Media Arts and Sciences, or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Media Arts and Sciences. Students collaborate closely with research advisors in a mentorship model. The program attracts candidates from diverse academic fields such as electrical engineering, physics, computer science, cognitive science, mechanical engineering, art and design, and learning sciences. PhD candidates must show outstanding performance in their master's studies and receive approval from a departmental review committee. To earn a PhD, students must pass MAS comprehensive examinations and successfully defend a dissertation featuring original, significant research conducted within one of the Media Lab's research teams.

To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor's degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
