The Film and Media Studies graduate program offers a well-organized, cross-disciplinary approach with a global outlook. This curriculum focuses on examining cinema and media through historical, theoretical, analytical, aesthetic, and critical lenses from a humanities viewpoint, situated within worldwide media culture. The program supports students in including focused location-based research for their doctoral work. With eighteen primary faculty members and fifteen additional affiliated professors, the department covers diverse fields and expertise. Furthermore, it serves as the home for multiple significant academic publishing initiatives.

It should be a coherent, completed essay with references that is 15-20 double-spaced pages in length. Final/Official transcripts will be required for all applicants who are admitted and have indicated their intent to enroll at UC Santa Barbara by submitting a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). UC Santa Barbara reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admissions process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found.
