The Doctor of Philosophy program in Media Arts and Technology equips students for careers in academia, industry research, government leadership, and artistic innovation. The MAT Ph.D. program establishes a strong foundation in the discipline's core principles through intensive coursework, seminars, and faculty collaboration. Students engage in cross-disciplinary initiatives and conduct groundbreaking research under faculty guidance, culminating in an original dissertation that contributes new knowledge to their chosen specialization.
Earning a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology involves three key components: completing required courses, passing the qualifying examination, and producing an original research dissertation (including both the proposal and final defense). Students achieve candidacy status after fulfilling the coursework and examination requirements.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in media arts and technology, art, music, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Note that outstanding students with a bachelor’s degree may apply directly to the MS/Ph.D program. Typically, students who enter with a bachelor’s degree will take longer to complete the Ph.D. than those with a master’s degree.
