The Media Studies PhD program, provided by the Department of Media Studies, represents one of three unique pathways within the Media Research and Practice doctoral degree at the College of Media, Communication and Information. Grounded primarily in modern cultural and critical theories, this PhD concentration explores the dynamic relationships between key elements of contemporary communication—media organizations, their content and messages, and their audiences—as mechanisms for producing cultural significance. The program investigates these interactions through an interdisciplinary lens incorporating social, economic, political, historical, legal/policy/regulatory, and global viewpoints, with particular attention to matters concerning emerging communication technologies and policies.
