Critical Cultural studies focus on examining how cultural expressions, discourses, and actions shape, challenge, or alter power dynamics in society, especially concerning communication-related issues involving class, race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, national identity, disability, environmental concerns, and globalization. Our goal is to cultivate a fairer and more inclusive public discourse to advance social equity. Faculty in this field explore diverse communication forms, from rhetoric to media and interpersonal interactions. Recent research topics include the economic structures of the dark web, memories of the Korean War, family narratives around childbirth, media representations of African American and Asian communities, sociopolitical factors influencing obesity, activist strategies in the U.S. and China, postcolonial remembrance, and environmental equity.
