Admission to the PhD program requires completion of an MA degree. The time to degree completion typically ranges from three to four years, depending on the student's previous coursework in communication and their academic progress.

As mandated by Graduate School policies, PhD candidates must complete at least six semesters of full-time residency beyond their bachelor's degree. While two semesters of residency credit may transfer from an MA earned elsewhere, a minimum of four semesters must be completed at CU-Boulder, including two consecutive semesters within one academic year. Residency credit is earned through full-time enrollment during fall/spring semesters or across two summer terms.

Doctoral students must maintain full-time status by enrolling in either: at least 5 graduate-level credit hours before passing comprehensive exams, or 5 dissertation credit hours after exam completion. All PhD requirements must be fulfilled within six years of program admission and initial coursework enrollment.
