Beyond their main focus on French and Francophone Studies, our PhD candidates craft personalized study plans for a secondary specialization, which may involve another Romance literature or a different academic discipline. This tailored approach allows students to build expertise in their selected areas while gaining the flexibility needed to thrive in a changing professional landscape. Structured secondary tracks are available in Cinema and Media Studies or Gender and Sexuality Studies, though students may also develop their own specialized path. Additional options include pursuing a dual degree with Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) or applying to the Masters in Legal Studies (MLS) program. A distinctive feature of graduate education at the University of Chicago is its graduate workshops, which foster cross-disciplinary collaboration between students and faculty university-wide. Doctoral students actively engage in and help organize these ongoing forums for interdisciplinary dialogue.
