Course selections should build foundational knowledge for teaching in the discipline while supporting specialized dissertation research. For literature and cultural studies students, two literary theory courses are mandatory to ensure methodological consistency in their doctoral work. Linguistics track students focus on Spanish linguistics coursework encompassing phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and language acquisition, supplemented by classes from the Linguistics Department.
