Ph.D. candidates work closely with their Supervisory Committee to design their academic program, with the committee also responsible for creating and overseeing the Qualifying Examination. Course selections should build foundational knowledge for teaching in the discipline while supporting specialized dissertation research. For literature and cultural studies students, two literary theory courses are mandatory to ensure methodological consistency in their doctoral work. Linguistics track students focus on Spanish linguistics coursework encompassing phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and language acquisition, supplemented by classes from the Linguistics Department. The Qualifying Examination typically assesses proficiency in these core subjects, the dissertation focus area, and any chosen minor field.
