The Portuguese and Brazilian Ph.D. Program offers in-depth graduate studies focusing on the language, literature, and cultures of Portuguese-speaking regions, with specialization options including Mainland and Island Portugal, Brazil, Lusophone Africa, and Luso-America. Participants benefit from the department's wide-ranging faculty expertise spanning Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, History, Ethnic and Intercultural Studies, Anthropology, Jewish Studies, and Bilingual Education. The department believes students should understand the worldwide scope of Portuguese-speaking communities while examining their language, literary works, and traditions, utilizing research methodologies tailored to their academic focus. Though incorporating interdisciplinary elements, this doctorate program maintains its primary concentration on Portuguese linguistics and Luso-Brazilian literary and cultural studies.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
