Islamic Studies explores Islam as a historical and cultural tradition documented through texts. This field introduces and specializes in Islamic thought across diverse forms—including literary, poetic, social, and political expressions—using methodologies like literary criticism, hermeneutics, history, sociology, and anthropology. Specialization areas encompass Quranic studies, Sufi literature, Islamic philosophy, as well as Islamic law and theology. Applicants without an advanced degree must apply to the Divinity School's MA program. Current University of Chicago MA students should complete three Islamic Studies courses (or equivalent, determined through consultation) before finishing their degree. PhD applicants need substantial preparation in Islamic studies, including proficiency in classical and Modern Standard Arabic, a background in human or social sciences, and prior coursework in Islamic history, religion, civilization, or literature. The application must detail the applicant's Arabic studies background. If three years of Arabic study are incomplete at the time of application, the candidate should outline their current or planned study program (including summer courses) to demonstrate they will meet this requirement by enrollment.
