Yale's Italian Studies Department provides a Ph.D. program focused on Italian literature, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches including history, rhetoric, critical theory, comparative literature, visual arts, religious and philosophical studies, and examinations of medieval, Renaissance, modern, and contemporary Italian works. For undergraduates, the department has dual objectives: teaching Italian language at all proficiency levels and fostering a comprehensive understanding of Italy's literary and cultural heritage. The Italian major is a humanities-focused program highlighting Italy's enduring influence on Western cultural and intellectual traditions. A key principle of the Italian major is that learning another language offers students valuable insights into both foreign cultures and their own. Foundational courses equip students with strong linguistic, literary, and historical knowledge of Italy, while elective courses span diverse fields such as film studies, philosophy, comparative literature, history, political theory, art, religious studies, theater, architecture, and music.
