The University of Washington's Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies has created a PhD program tailored for modern humanities scholars. This curriculum offers an in-depth education in Spanish and Latin American literature while encouraging exploration of the humanities' broader societal impact today.
PhD candidates in Hispanic Studies will enroll in the Graduate Certificate in Public Scholarship through the Simpson Center for the Humanities. This program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience regarding public engagement in humanities research. Dissertation options include conventional academic manuscripts or innovative formats like digital publications, creative portfolios, or curated exhibitions with academic foundations. Typically completed in 15 quarters (or 12 for MA holders), the program accommodates diverse scholarly approaches.
BA or MA in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, or related field, preferred.
Minimum score required for admission: TOEFL iBT: 92. TOEFL pBT: 580. IELTS: 7.0.
