Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary academic field focused on examining people of African descent across the African continent, the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the wider diaspora. It pioneers scholarship that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries while offering deeper insights into race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Since its establishment, Africana Studies has significantly influenced research and academic discussions in the humanities and social sciences by challenging conventional knowledge systems and research approaches. The field has consistently rejected geographical limitations in its examinations. Given that the nation-state is a relatively modern concept in global history—and because cultural expressions like art, dance, music, and literature transcend borders—scholars approach Africana Studies without spatial or temporal constraints when analyzing the evolution of African-descended communities. Consequently, Africana Studies equips students to value cultural and intellectual diversity, multifaceted viewpoints, and global interconnectedness, all of which are vital for higher education, knowledge creation, and addressing 21st-century challenges.
Cornell University's diverse college system, with its robust traditional disciplines and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, creates an exceptional setting for graduate studies in this field. Additionally, Cornell has assembled a prominent group of scholars in the Humanities, Visual and Expressive Culture, and Social Sciences whose collective research represents the forefront of Africana Studies. With faculty expertise spanning Africa, the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin America, the university offers a multidisciplinary, transnational Ph.D. program in this dynamic field.
