Theology students must consequently engage with theological history, examine the defining features of theological assertions and discourse, assess meaning and truth criteria within traditions, explore theological reflection methods, consider the justification (if any) for modifying traditions, and address various approaches to responding to or upholding critiques of theological concepts and religious convictions. Through this, theology students showcase their historical knowledge, methodological expertise, and foundation in a particular theological perspective. Typically, the progress (or pre-exam) conference occurs during the spring quarter of the second year or the fall of the third year. In Theology, this conference involves the student's qualifying examination committee, evaluating completed coursework, the coherence of the study plan, preparedness for qualifying exams, and progress on the dissertation proposal. Following the conference, the advisor submits a report and exam timeline to the Dean of Students.
