The Bible studies field focuses on analyzing and interpreting Jewish and Christian scriptures along with related texts, examining both their historical contexts and their ongoing significance as sacred texts. This involves four key research areas: the historical backgrounds from ancient Israel to the Roman era, the preservation and development of biblical and post-biblical writings, interpretive methods throughout history, and theological studies of these texts. Students specializing in Bible studies select one of four academic tracks: 1. Hebrew Scriptures and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, 2. Hebrew Bible and Early Jewish Writings, 3. Jewish and Christian Biblical Studies, or 4. New Testament and Early Christian Texts. The progress review (or pre-examination meeting) typically occurs during the second year's spring quarter or third year's fall quarter. For Bible students, this conference involves their examination committee and evaluates completed coursework, the proposed study plan, preparation for qualifying exams, and dissertation development. Following the meeting, the advisor submits an assessment and exam timeline to the Dean of Students.
