Loyola University's theology PhD program prepares students for careers focused on teaching and advanced academic research. The program features two distinct specializations. The Integrative Studies in Ethics and Theology (ISET) track examines the intersection between theological studies (both historical and systematic) and Christian ethics, exploring how these disciplines interact within specific thinkers and address practical theological and ethical issues. ISET students enter with either an Ethics or Theology concentration. The New Testament and Early Christianity specialization delves into biblical texts and related writings within their historical, cultural, and religious settings, employing diverse literary and historical methodologies. Students investigate the New Testament's complex nature while studying the vibrant Jewish and Greco-Roman societies, Hebrew Scriptures, and varied expressions of Second Temple Judaism. Many participants pursue teaching careers, making pedagogical training essential. After completing coursework, doctoral candidates typically enroll in two non-credit pedagogical courses and serve as teaching assistants in their third year. These courses facilitate deep reflection on teaching methods and student engagement strategies. Participants create course syllabi, draft teaching philosophy statements, and conclude with a graduate symposium on educational practices.
