This specialized major option is designed for students who have a well-defined vision for an interdisciplinary academic path that isn't offered through conventional major-minor combinations. Past student-designed programs have included combinations like philosophy with mathematics, biology, or economics. Participants must complete the initial three core requirements of the standard major (totaling six courses) plus six supplementary courses forming a unified curriculum, with at least one from the Philosophy Department. All selected allied field courses require departmental approval. Prospective students must apply to the undergraduate studies director by mid-Spring Quarter of their sophomore year, submitting both a proposed course plan and an essay outlining their interdisciplinary focus and objectives. Additionally, applicants need a Philosophy Department faculty member to sponsor their program. Those interested should meet with the undergraduate studies assistant for application details, including office hours and forms available on the department's wiki or website.
