The Ethnic Studies program at the University of Utah investigates power dynamics as manifested through governmental institutions, societal structures, and personal interactions, while questioning conventional notions of race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, and gender. Learners analyze conventional historical and cultural narratives through the lens of marginalized communities, while reflecting on contemporary racial issues and systemic discrimination. The program features core classes in ethnic studies foundations and theoretical approaches, supplemented by specialized electives across five focus areas: African American, Native American, Asian Pacific American, Chicana/o, or broader ethnic studies topics. Throughout the curriculum, students develop skills to analyze sociopolitical and historical matters from diverse cultural perspectives within American society, employing multiple academic approaches. These analytical tools can then be utilized to address modern challenges related to racial, gender, and ethnic equity. Graduates emerge prepared for professional roles in both nonprofit and governmental sectors, serving communities that have historically faced systemic disadvantages.
