Classics explores the rich heritage of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations in their entirety: encompassing their languages (Greek and Latin), literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical thought, and artistic/archaeological remains. This field connects us to our origins and shapes our contemporary identity. Modern concepts like citizenship, migration, democratic systems, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships all trace back to ancient traditions and societal structures.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, intellectually stimulating education with exceptional career versatility. Mastering ancient languages adds unique academic rigor to humanities studies. Our alumni pursue diverse paths as archivists, legal professionals, policy advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business strategists. They excel in public relations, cultural institutions, corporate sectors, and technology fields, where their linguistic proficiency, analytical abilities, and communication expertise are highly sought after.
