Our department provides graduate studies in Classics, Ancient History, and Sanskrit. While we offer an M.A. degree for students pursuing Ph.D. studies in related programs at Brown, we don't accept direct admissions into a standalone Master's program. The field of Classics demands an exceptional combination of broad perspective and specialized focus. As students advance toward their doctoral degree, they can expand their understanding of Greek and Latin literature, history, and culture, along with associated disciplines like Sanskrit, archaeology, and epigraphy. The path to acquiring this knowledge differs across programs. Departmental activities include structured courses, seminars, and supervised research, with significant flexibility to accommodate individual academic goals. We prioritize comprehensive mastery of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literature, and history - or ancient Indian studies for Sanskrit scholars. Students are additionally urged to explore relevant courses beyond the Classics Department that align with their research interests.
