The scientific exploration of human development examines patterns of growth, developmental milestones, and behavioral transformations throughout life. The Human Developmental Sciences Program (HDS) takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing coursework from Anthropology, Biology, Cognitive Science, Communication, Education Studies, Ethnic Studies, History, Linguistics, Literature, Psychology, Sociology, and Urban Studies and Planning. HDS's curriculum highlights development as a fundamental lens for interpreting human behavior. Course topics span diverse aspects of development: from neural and sensory maturation, to analytical thinking and decision-making, to interpersonal dynamics and cultural evolution. HDS integrates and organizes the university's exceptional research and instructional resources in this field, spotlighting the elements that shape human growth and transformation. Research in human development has grown more pivotal to addressing critical matters impacting individuals at all life stages, as well as evolving family structures and policies concerning youth, wellness, and learning. Grasping the mechanisms of human development is vital for assessing these concerns and formulating effective solutions. HDS concentrates on three primary domains: physical maturation, mental and linguistic advancement, and social-cultural growth. These areas investigate both specific neurological/cognitive progressions and broader societal influences on development.
