Advancements in technology along with cultural and economic globalization are bringing societies closer together. Yet divisions based on ethnicity, religion, and economics still spark conflicts both within and between nations. This growing interconnectedness coupled with persistent divides highlights the need for deeper insight into different cultures and social structures. Societies cannot be analyzed in isolation or at just one moment in history - they are influenced by worldwide and regional factors, including political, military, economic, and cultural dynamics, as well as their historical development. People and communities also play an active role in reshaping these environments as they reinterpret their past. The International Studies Program takes an interdisciplinary approach, leveraging UC San Diego's existing expertise in global specializations. Political science offers well-established disciplines in international relations and comparative politics. Economics provides essential theories and methods for comprehending our interconnected world. Sociology, business, and anthropology focus on comparing different societies, their economies, markets, and cultures. Language and literature departments offer diverse courses exploring non-English speaking cultures, while area studies deliver in-depth knowledge about specific countries and regions.
