Advancements in technology along with cultural and economic globalization are bringing societies closer together. Yet divisions rooted in ethnicity, religion, and economics persist, sparking conflicts both within and between communities. This growing interconnectedness coupled with enduring divides highlights the need for deeper insight into diverse cultures and social structures. Societies cannot be analyzed in isolation or viewed through a static lens—they evolve within broader global and regional contexts influenced by political, military, economic, and cultural factors, as well as historical legacies. People and communities actively reshape these environments as they reinterpret their own histories. The International Studies Program takes an interdisciplinary approach, leveraging UC San Diego's existing expertise in global specializations. Political science contributes established frameworks in international relations and comparative politics. Economic principles and analytical methods are essential for comprehending our interconnected world. Sociology, business studies, and anthropology focus on comparing social structures, markets, and cultural practices across societies. Language and literature departments offer extensive coursework exploring non-English linguistic traditions. Additionally, regional studies programs deliver in-depth knowledge about specific countries and geographical areas.
