The UCLA Classics Department ranks among the top three Humanities departments at UCLA, placing in the national top ten according to the most recent National Research Council assessment. As the cornerstone of the Humanities, Classics gave rise to numerous academic disciplines including philology, philosophy, political systems (such as democracy), theater arts, linguistics, archaeology, literary criticism, and more.
Our department offers comprehensive programs for both undergraduate and graduate students, engaging approximately 2,000 undergraduates annually through courses exploring Greek and Roman civilizations, their languages, archaeological remains, and historical developments.
Our faculty comprises accomplished scholars from diverse backgrounds, primarily at mid-career stages, whose specialties cover the breadth of classical studies. Traditional strengths in Classical philology, paleography, Classical linguistics, Byzantine studies, and medieval Latin have been augmented by emerging expertise in Greek/Mediterranean archaeology, Indo-European linguistics, ancient/medieval philosophy (especially Greek traditions), Greek political theory, gender and sexuality in antiquity, and Neo-Latin/Renaissance studies. Notably, we boast the highest representation of women faculty among comparable Classics departments at leading research institutions.
