The Spanish Master's program spans two years, introducing new graduate students to the diverse literary and cultural traditions of Peninsular, Latin American, and Chicanx/Latinx studies. Students earn their degree after fulfilling course requirements and passing both written and oral comprehensive exams. This program serves as foundational preparation for doctoral studies, equipping graduates with essential knowledge in literature, linguistics, and critical theory - core competencies the department views as vital for advanced graduate work across all specializations. Additionally, a student's performance in the Master's program influences their eligibility to continue into the doctoral program following the Master's Exam cycle (refer to Permission to Proceed section). Master's candidates are required to complete at least three quarters of departmental coursework, with a maximum completion timeframe of two years.
