The MA TESOL is a graduate program tailored for professionals aiming to teach English to non-native speakers. This degree focuses on equipping educators with skills for teaching ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in contexts beyond U.S. public schools. The curriculum explores second language learning theories, TESOL instructional approaches, English grammar and phonology teaching methods, and specialized content delivery for ESL (English as a Second Language). The 36-credit program (12 courses) consists of eight mandatory core classes (24 credits) and four electives (12 credits), culminating in a comprehensive exam. The MA TESOL prepares graduates to teach English language learners worldwide.
Students in the MA TESOL program develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on expertise in key ESL program components, including language acquisition processes, sociocultural language contexts, program design, and supporting learner goals. TESOL candidates at UT Arlington balance theoretical studies with practical application, gaining proficiency in effective English language instruction while developing insights into diverse language systems. The program requires completion of 36 credit hours along with at least 60 hours of supervised classroom teaching experience.
