The Department provides a Ph.D. program in East Asian Studies, featuring concentrations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students pursuing the doctoral degree may receive an M.A. en route to completing their Ph.D.
The graduate curriculum focuses on intensive language and textual analysis training while equally emphasizing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary research. Alongside conventional critical and theoretical approaches, the program fosters examination of contemporary challenges to established conceptual and methodological paradigms. This academic offering leverages faculty expertise in key areas of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture while forging interdisciplinary connections within UCI's broader scholarly community.
Students must complete seven additional courses (including the option of HUMAN 398A or HUMAN 398B) in consultation with faculty advisors. A minimum of three courses must be taken outside the Department, covering relevant literary or cultural theory subjects. Language requirement courses cannot be applied toward the coursework requirement.
