The Department provides a Ph.D. program in East Asian Studies, offering specializations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students pursuing the doctoral degree may also earn an M.A. along the way.
The graduate program focuses on intensive language and textual analysis training while equally addressing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary studies. Alongside traditional critical approaches, the curriculum promotes engagement with contemporary challenges to conventional theoretical and methodological paradigms. The program leverages faculty expertise in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture while fostering connections with UCI's broader academic community.
Housed within the Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies, this program emphasizes interdisciplinary, multicultural research, incorporating studies in feminist theory, women's cultural roles, socioeconomic status, historical contributions, cross-cultural literature, artistic representations, women of color, and LGBTQ+ studies. Both current and incoming graduate students may apply, with early application recommended to effectively incorporate the Feminist Emphasis into their academic trajectory. Successful completion results in a certification letter from the Department Chair.
