This program provides specializations in diverse languages and cultural traditions, including Hindi, Urdu, Indonesian, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Tamil, and Khmer. Literature is broadly defined to encompass not just creative works and cultural expressions across genres, but also texts related to religion, philosophy, history, and visual/performing arts. Cultural analysis extends to examining social, anthropological, economic, and political dimensions. Students can delve into the vibrant cultural, social, and religious heritage of South and Southeast Asia, as well as their modern-day societies. The coursework spans cultural history, classical literature, sacred texts, folk traditions, oral narratives, performance arts (such as poetry recitals, music, theater, dance, and cinema), and contemporary writings from colonial and post-colonial eras.
