The South Asian Languages Program at the graduate level provides Master's and Doctoral degree options, specializing in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Buddhist Studies. This program creates an ideal setting for achieving advanced language skills while offering professional development through diverse courses, seminars, and discussions focused on analyzing, interpreting, and studying South Asian languages and literature. Unique course offerings include specialized studies in early Buddhist text translation, Sanskrit inscriptions, comparative Buddha biographies, Pali/Prakrit/Gandhari languages, medieval Hindi dialects (such as Braj, Avadhi, and Rajasthani), and historical examinations of Indian religious themes.

Faculty expertise and departmental strengths span multiple research domains, including: Sanskrit literature and linguistics, Middle Indo-Aryan languages, Indian religious traditions, Buddhist scholarship, ancient inscriptions, writing system evolution, Hindi linguistics, medieval devotional literature, comparative mythology, saintly narratives, and the historical representation of Hindu deities. The Department of Asian Languages and Literature also hosts the renowned Early Buddhist Manuscript Project—a collaborative initiative with the British Library that has gained global recognition for its groundbreaking work on the oldest surviving Buddhist textual materials.

Qualification Requirements

A graduate student is expected to maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. Once accepted into the Ph.D. program the student shall formally establish their three fields of specialization, at least two of which must be taken with faculty in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. The three fields in the aggregate must represent a broad coverage of language and literature. Minimum TOEFL Internet score: 80
